Like Perge, Aspendos was founded inland, in the lush Pamphylia region, alongside a gentle river (Kopru Cayi, the ancient Eurymedon). The ruins of the city are dotted around a small grassy plateau, a promontory which rises above the plain, surrounded by fields of crops that stretch as far as the bluish foothills of Mount Taurus. This beautiful countryside is the backdrop for the theatre of Aspendos, one of the best-preserved theatres of the ancient world and worth a visit in its own right.
