Built in honour of the "Virgin of Battles" who was said to have brought the Catholics victory in the Battle of Covadonga, the cave houses an 18C wooden Virgin Mary, the venerated Santina. She is patron saint of Asturias and a major procession takes place in her name on 8 September.
