The highest point in South Dakota, situated in Custer State Park, is the granite Harvey Peak, one of the oldest peaks in the United States, dating back some 200 million years. The scenic trail (12km/7mi return) offers panoramic views of the range's summits, pine forest (sadly very damaged), along with the vast plains of Badlands and Wyoming.
