The main thoroughfare of the old town starts at the castle and follows the coast towards the abbey and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Daniel Defoe wrote of the street, in the early 18C, "the largest, longest and finest street, not only in Britain, but in the world". The few original buildings that are still intact enable us to conjure up an image of medieval Edinburgh.
