This vast lake was created by the explosion of a gigantic volcano some fourteen thousand years ago. It lies at the foot of steep slopes; clouds of steam indicate the presence of calderas. Here, the heated ground has been prepared: holes have been dug and cemented into it, closed by large wooden lids, in which the families and restaurateurs of Furnas cook their cozido, a kind of local stew.
