As early as 1589, the Portuguese built Fort Santa Cruz to protect the town of Galle. The Dutch reinforced its walls and laid out the district inside the Fort's ramparts. Its stately colonial houses along perpendicular lanes, untouched by time, bear witness to its military heritage and are a physical reminder of the shared history of Europe and Asia. Make sure you save time to walk around the ramparts near the lighthouse.
