Inland and easily accessible from La Passe and Anse Réunion along the La Veuve nature reserve, St Cloud castle was built in around 1820. It stands at the foot of a mountain in the heart of a former vanilla plantation, at its peak in the late 19C before synthetic vanilla was invented (in the early 20C). Part of the building is occupied by a hotel, but there's nothing to stop you from having a drink here and enjoying the superb gardens all around.
