The Largo do Pelourinho is located in a street in the old quarter of Salvador. Its name comes from the pelourinho (pillory) that stood here during colonial times, and it was the place where slaves were punished before the masses. Today, this picture-perfect location with its lovely colonial houses is in complete contrast with its dark history. Surrounded by the colourful and harmonious façades of houses once owned by sugar barons, the square is the heart of the upper town and is often frequented by groups of musicians playing traditional percussion instruments.
