Created in the 16C, the Humble Administrator's Garden was the private estate of Wang Xianzheng, a censor at the imperial court. This 52ha garden is the largest in Suzhou. Without excessive decoration, it favours perspective and variety of landscapes. The garden's western section is renowned for the 36 Mandarin Duck Pairs Pavilion, which is built on stilts and has blue-tinted stained-glass windows. The central part, the most beautiful, is occupied by a huge lake dotted with steep islets.
