The semi-pagan cult of the Difunta Correa inspires incredible devotion. Note the impressive number of ex-votos dotting the stairway leading to the shrine built in her memory - indeed the whole country is littered with makeshift oratories. Legend has it that this mythical figure died of exhaustion, whereas her newborn baby survived at her breast.
