The arts and ambience of an ancient Pueblo community are very much alive in modern Zuni, largest (with 259sq mi of land) of New Mexico's pueblos. Scouts sent by Coronado in 1540 believed Zuni to be one of the Seven Cities of Cibola; its gold turned out to be sunlight reflecting golden straw mixed with mud, used in adobe construction. The style still predominates in Zuni; outdoor clay ovens seem to be fixed in every backyard. A mural at the Pueblo of Zuni Visitor Information Center depicts the Zuni origin story. Silversmiths, fetish carvers, potters and jewelers are among the Southwest's most skilled; their detailed work is seen at Ashiwi Awan Museum & Heritage Center, where exhibits describe herbal and medicinal plant use and cooking. Two dozen kachina murals in Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, built in 1629, depict a complex spiritual life blending tribal and Catholic traditions.
