With its tall mirrors, tiled walls and tin ceilings, this rustic Italian eatery is every inch the classic trattoria. Hidden in plain sight just across from Grand Central Market, it's a known quantity with the local office crowd, who fill the tightly packed tables at lunch. A few bites, and you'll be ready to pledge allegiance to the Republic, too. The array of excellent handmade pastas is seemingly endless, from classic lasagna and osso buco-stuffed agnolotti to the “chef’s favorite” passarelli in a tomato-rich tripe stew. But pry yourself away from the noodle nexus, and you'll be equally delighted by daily specials like octopus with lentils and roasted peppers. Be sure to finish with the buttery olive-oil cake, studded with blueberries and citrus.
