Dedicated to Shiva, the Muang Tham is thought to have been built in the 11C. Although the temple adopted the traditional Khmer plan, its layout, featuring four L-shaped ponds is unique. At its centre, two laterite walls, each encompassing four gopura with superb balustered windows, protect the sacred buildings. Note the refined ornamentation of the lintels, small columns and door jambs, in keeping with the style of Baphuon and Khleang. The inner courtyard comprises of five brick towers and two libraries, while the central prang contains elements symbolising Mount Kailas, the abode of the god Shiva.
