This episcopal city retained its autonomy up until 1891. Today visitors can still wander in the medieval streets extending from the Royal College to St Machar's Cathedral. College Bounds, High Street, Don Street and The Shanonry are still lined by a variety of one- or two-storey little houses, and more imposing residences.
