The imposing 13C Cahir Castle, on the island of Suir, was to become the stronghold of the Butler family, an Anglo-Norman family who reigned over the entire southwest of Ireland at the era of English domination. Its magnificent setting has featured in movies such as Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, John Boorman's Excalibur and the TV series, The Tudors.
