The complex of Banská Bystrica town castle includes several buildings surrounded by the remains of the barbican. The Romanesque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the oldest building in the city (13C); its beautiful altarpiece by Master Paul from Levoča is still intact. The castle also houses Matej's house (1479) in Gothic style and the old town hall (c 1500).
