Delightful landscapes await visitors here: sometimes desolate, harsh and wild, and dotted with mountain lakes, sometimes benevolent and characterised by gentle wooded valleys. With its attractive stone villages, Snowdonia is a paradise for eco-tourists and hiking and fishing enthusiasts. Snowdonia was designated a national park in 1951, extending over an area of 2 180km2. Its highest peak is Yr Wydda Fawr (Great Tumulus), at 1 085m, though it has over a hundred peaks exceeding 600m.
