This vast esplanade lined by somewhat stern buildings is a typical example of ex-GDR town planning and as such is home to several symbols of Communist ideology. The Fountain of Friendship between Peoples replaced the statue of Berolina, an allegory of the city, at the end of the Second World War. The Urania World Clock shows the time in some of the world's major cities.
