Erected in 1969, the 368m/1,207ft-high Fernsehturm was the pride of East Berlin. The panoramic platform offers an exceptional view of the urbanscape of Berlin and its historical centre, along the axis of Unter den Linden, whose monuments seem tiny from above. The vast expanse of greenery is impressive: the parks of Friedrichshain and the Tiergarten and the Grunewald forest are easily identifiable. The former Templehof airport can be seen to the south and the straight line of Karl-Marx-Allee to the southeast.
