This fortified castle built of red sandstone was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. The space, surrounded by partly restored walls, is dotted with animal pens. The parapet walk offers a panoramic view of the small town and Forte de São Sebastião, the salt marshes, the Guadiana, the bridge linking Portugal and Spain, Ayamonte, Villa Real de Santo Antonio and the coast to the south.
