This valley dominated by the glaciers of the Gran Paradiso (4 061m) was focused on a vast mining industry until 1970; its main industries are now tourism, winter sports and crafts. Don't miss the pretty Lillaz waterfall, 4km from the village of the same name, then continue as far as the lake, Lago di Loie (via the signposted path), which affords a plunging view over the top of the valley from a height of 2 396m. From Valnontey you can walk to the lush Paradisia Alpine Garden (altitude 1 700m).
