This is one of Germany's most beautiful hiking regions, thanks to its many fortified castles and striking red sandstone rock formations. Some 47 of its rock structures have been classified as natural monuments. The ruins of Altdahn Castle, which dates back to 1100, stand above the rooftops of the town.
