Beschrijving

Spanning the Nervión, this structure acts as the entry point to the Biscaia region. Opened in 1893, the transporter bridge is the oldest in the world and has already carried more than 650 million passengers across to Portugalete on the opposite bank. A contemporary of the Eiffel Tower and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006, the bridge was designed by Alberto de Palacio in collaboration with Ferdinand Arnodin. A panoramic footbridge 50m high offers views of the estuary.
