The historic quarter of Nakacho, to the north of the castle, was where the servants of the daimyo lived until the Meiji Restoration. Several houses are open to the public: Iwata house (31 Wakado-cho) provides an insight into how a samurai family would have lived. Ishiba house (88 Kamenoko-machi) bears witness to trade during the Edo period. Some are still in activity.
