Populated by half a million Vietnamese of Chinese origin (the Hoa), it is home to a vast array of shops - some of which are seemingly invisible and part of the underground economy -which ensure the continued prosperity of this part of the city, where items on sale here range from rice to high-tech gadgets, and tea to leather goods.
