You'll need to undertake a long journey in a four-wheel drive (allow half a day) to reach Altyn Arashan Gorge, renowned for its sulphurous waters and healing properties. Very popular with the Russians and the Kyrgyz, it is now a hub for western travellers, who set out from here to roam the valley on horseback. The high point is the Ala Kul pass, where you can take in the gorgeous scenery of the high mountain pastures. For hikers of all levels.
