Built by Count Rognvald and dedicated to his murdered uncle, Count Magnus, this new romanesque style cathedral (1137-1152) is a contemporary of Durham and the nave of Dunfermline Abbey. Severe and with little decoration, the exterior is dominated by the tower and belfry. The three portals on the western façade are later, with original alternating red and yellow sandstone.
