The castle has been the home of the Maitland family since the 16C. The original fortified house has been transformed and enlarged several times with the addition of towers and wings. The splendid main façade is a result of successive changes. The harmony of the building is brought out by the differing roof times around the central cyma and the decorative effect obtained by the combination of ornaments, corbelled design and balustrades.
