This quiet district has so far escaped the explosion in activity on the South Bank in recent years, but for how much longer? Dominated by St Thomas's Hospital and the Imperial War Museum (occupying the former Bethlem Hospital), this "urban village" developed around its manor, Lambeth Palace, which has been the residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury since the 13C.
