Beschrijving

This Italianate frame residence was home to legendary conservationist John Muir from 1890 until his death in 1914. Built in 1882 by Muir's father-in-law, Dr. John Strenzel, the home was part of Muir's 2,600-acre fruit ranch. It is furnished with early-20C period pieces that reflect the Victorian inclinations of the Strenzel family and convey little of Muir's own simple taste. Muir wrote many of his influential books in the second-floor scribble den, which still contains his chair and desk. The ranch occupied lands formerly owned by Vicente Martinez as part of an early-19C land grant; a short trail leads through the nearly nine-acre grounds to the pleasant Martinez Adobe (1849). A film on Muir's life is shown in the visitor center.
