An ideal spot from which to survey the entrance to the Ionian Sea, the promontory occupied by the Castle of Methoni was the site of an ancient city then a medieval town. This formidable fortress, which was also lived in, was built by the Venetians before it became the property of the Ottomans for 300 years; in 1828 it was seized by the French General Maison. Don't miss the Bourdzi Tower (16C) or the view from the rampart walk.
