The vast Place Royale du Peyrou is a promenade that was built to accommodate a monumental statue of Louis XIV. Laid out in terraces, as of 1688, it stands at the highest point in Montpellier. From here, there is fine view over the garrigue, the Cévennes, the sea and, in fine weather, the Canigou. St Clement Aqueduct, which used to carry water from the Le Lez source to the 18C water tower, cuts across the promenade. Inspiration for the two rows of 22m-high arcades came from the Pont du Gard.
