Atsuta-jingu
De Groene Gids

Praktische informatie

Beschrijving

Dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu (called Atsuta-no-Okami here), Atsuta-jingu is the third most venerated shrine in Japan. Architecturally similar to Ise Shrine, it was rebuilt in 1955 having burned down during the war. According to the old chronicles, Atsuta-jingu was founded in the year 86 to house the Kusanagi no tsurugi sword, one of the Three Sacred Treasures symbolising the legitimacy of the imperial throne. Hidden away in the main temple, it cannot be seen by the eyes of mere mortals, who have to make do with the well-stocked Treasure Hall.
