This stronghold built in the 12C along the River Tweed, was one of the great English bastions used to counter attacks by the Scots. The latter besieged it on numerous occasions, and were successful four times. It was here that Edward I came to arbitrate between the pretentions of 13 competitors to the Scottish throne, including Robert Bruce and the successor designated by Edward, John Balliol.
