Enlarged many times, the famous stadium of Olympia could hold some 45 000 people. The spectators, men only, sat on movable wooden seats in tiers mounted on the embankment surrounding the stadium. The marble exedra where the judges sat has all but disappeared, but the starting and finishing lines are still visible. The track, a fine stretch of sand, measured exactly 192.27m, 600 times the local unit for measuring distance: the foot of Olympia (32.04cm).
