Quadrupling the space available, Haussmann refurbished this square (the archaeological crypt was a later addition) which enjoys a breathtaking view of the façade of Notre-Dame de Paris. It is invariably packed with a multilingual crowd and is the location of the iconic "zero kilometre" marker for France's major roads, depicted by a small bronze slab in the heart of the square.
