The most famous square in Pisa is (despite the crowds) an architectural ensemble of exceptional unity, which comprises four remarkable, universally renowned monuments. Bordered by a narrow encircling wall of crenellated red brick, this vast enclosed space is home to the glaring white marble mass of the baptistry, the cathedral and its famous campanile, the Leaning Tower. In the background the Camposanto (cemetery) is striking for its long wall of blind arcading in white marble.
