Beschrijving

The largest and most opulent home in Portland perches on a 940ft crest in Imperial Heights, looking east over the city, the river and the major peaks of the Cascade Mountains. Built for Henry Pittock (1835-1919), who came west on the Oregon Trail in 1853 and eventually amassed a fortune as the publisher of the Oregonian, the mansion was designed by San Francisco architect Edward T. Foulkes and completed in 1914. Stylistically the structure is a French Renaissance Revival chateau with exterior walls of Tenino sandstone from Washington State.Visitors may wander through on their own or join a guided tour (45min) to learn more about the mansion's history and details of its design. The fine period furnishings and Oriental rugs are not original to the house but amply convey the luxurious lifestyle of this prominent Portland family.Gate Lodge (b 503-823-3627), the former grounds keeper's house, is now a restaurant serving lunch and afternoon tea. The landscaped grounds of Pittock mansion adjoin Forest Park, with trailheads at the west end of the parking lot and beyond Gate Lodge.
