The discovery of this mine sparked the Gold Rush of 1923. In 1927, the mine started operating with the help of American and Canadian investors. Over 50 million tonnes of high grade copper, gold and silver ore were mined from its subsoil up until 1976. Today the foundry is operated by Glencore, which remains one of the world's major copper producers.
