Calle El Conde, a long pedestrian street lined with shops, is the beating heart of the colonial town. It has a square at each end: Parque Colón, at the foot of the cathedral, and Parque de la Independencia, dominated by Puerta del Conde, which leads to the mausoleum where the nation's fathers rest in peace: Duarte, Sánchez and Mella.
