The approach road (leaving from just after the manor house) goes in front of Doyle Column, which was erected in memory of Sir John Doyle, governor from 1803 to 1815. A plaque there indicates the distances between each island, from the islands to England, and between the islands and France. From St Martin's Point, to the south of Guernsey, there is a fine view of the rocky point and lighthouse; in the distance, you can make out (from left to right) Alderney, Herm, Sark and Jersey.
