The Merchants Exchange Building was formerly the focal point of trade and finance. Men posted on its rooftop lookouts announced the arrival of ships to the merchants and speculators below, eager to do business and strike deals in the trade halls of the former Corn Exchange, decorated by marine artist William Coulter.
