The high peaks dominating the Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Ruta 40 Nueva) serve as a reminder that in Patagonia the lakes are of glacial origin. Over the 100km or so between San Martín de los Andes and Villa La Angostura, a string of lakes reflect the sublime landscapes all around. Give yourself time to take it all in by stopping at the lookouts or on the shores of the lakes, where volcanic sand beaches, fields of reeds and sheer rocky cliffs alternate.
