Near the cathedral, the historic town was once surrounded by ramparts. It is rich in 16C and 18C houses with painted façades, some of which are embellished with wrought iron signs and oriel windows. The main square and heart of the town is Gallusplatz, while Schmiedgasse, Spisergasse and Marktgasse are steeped in authentic character.
