Praktische informatie

Beschrijving

St Peter's Gate, both the main entrance to Peter and Paul Fortress and a triumphal arch, was initially made of wood. The wooden bas-reliefs are all that remain of the original decorations. Made by the German sculptor Hans Konrad Ossner, they represent Simon the Magician thrown to the ground by the prayers of St Peter, symbolising the Russian victories over Sweden. While the apostle is endowed with the features of Peter I, the sculptor didn't go so far as to give Simon the features of Charles XII! The two-headed lead eagle under the bas-reliefs is the emblem of the Russian Empire.
