Chiang Mai is on the doorstep of the mountains in the north of the country. In just a few kilometres, visitors will encounter tranquil and enchanting landscapes perfect for meditation. It's hardly surprising, therefore, that monks built a temple here...and what a temple it is! For Thais, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, dating back to 1383, is one of the most sacred sites in the country and as such is a popular place of pilgrimage. In particular, admire the magnificent gold-plated 15C chedi, surrounded by gilded copper umbrellas. From the terrace, enjoy an impressive view of Chiang Mai and the plain.
