Beschrijving

This furnace was used to smelt iron ore brought from Cumberland by sea which was mixed with local charcoal. It was in operation from 1753 until the 1870s. The wheel which turned to activate the bellows and the vast charcoal and iron ore storage hangars can still be seen.
