In the vestiges of a tower in the west wall of Tiryns, a flight of 80 steps winds down to a postern gate, constituting an unusual feature in the city's defences. If an attacking force had succeeded in breaching the lower postern gate by climbing up the steps, they would have been assailed on all sides by the defenders.
