Beschrijving
In 1793 Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe approved a surveyor's gridiron plan for 10 city blocks that make up York, marked out by Front Street, George Street, Adelaide Street and Berkeley Street. By 1813 Jarvis Street marked the west boundary. The block between Front and King streets served as a public market. Nothing remains from Simcoe's era, but the neighbourhood does have a few buildings which date from the 19C, including the busy St. Lawrence Market and Toronto's first Post Office.
