In the Venetian dialect, Zanipòlo - the nickname given to this lively, harmonious square - is a contraction of Giovanni and Paolo (John and Paul). Lined by the Rio dei Mendicanti and the trompe l'oeil perspectives of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, the square is home to the majestic equestrian monument of Bartolomeo Colleoni by Verrocchio (1434-88).
